Mua Cave, also known as Hang Mua or Lying Dragon Mountain (Ngoa Long), offers the most famous and breathtaking viewpoint in all of Ninh Binh province. From the dragon and phoenix-adorned summit, you get a sweeping 360-degree panorama of the Tam Coc - Bich Dong rice paddies, the winding Ngo Dong River, and the endless karst mountains stretching to the horizon. The area is part of the Trang An UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Climb

The 500 stone steps wind up the side of Ngoa Long Mountain, lined with dragon and phoenix carvings along the stone balustrades. The path splits near the top into two viewpoints:

  • Dragon View (left fork): The most famous viewpoint overlooking the Tam Coc rice paddies and Ngo Dong River. This is where the iconic photos are taken, featuring a stone dragon perched on the cliff edge.
  • Pagoda Viewpoint (right fork): A quieter viewpoint with a small pagoda. Equally stunning views but fewer crowds. Great for sunset.

The climb is moderately challenging. The steps are stone and can be slippery when wet. There are no railings at the top viewpoints, so be careful near the edges.

Best Time to Visit

  • Sunrise (5:30-6:30 AM): Magical golden light, fewest crowds, cool temperatures. The absolute best time to visit.
  • Late afternoon (4:00-5:30 PM): Beautiful sunset light, tour groups have left. Second-best option.
  • Avoid midday: Extremely hot in summer, crowded with tour groups, harsh light for photos.

Tips for Visiting

  • Bring plenty of water - there's no shade on most of the climb
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip (not flip-flops!)
  • Start early to beat the tour bus crowds that arrive around 10 AM
  • Allow 1.5-2 hours total: 30 min climb, 30 min at top, 20 min descent
  • The base area has lotus ponds and a small cave worth exploring
  • During golden rice season (May-June), the view from the top is extraordinary
  • For the best experience, combine with Tam Coc (5 km) and Bich Dong Pagoda (3 km)

Mua Cave is located about 5 km from Tam Coc wharf and 12 km from Ninh Binh city center. The easiest options:
